About Us
The Stoneham Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program was established to enhance the safety and well-being of our community members, particularly those experiencing mental health crises. Originating from a nationally recognized model developed in the late 1980s, CIT aims to bridge the gap between law enforcement and mental health services, ensuring compassionate and effective responses to individuals in crisis.
Our CIT program offers a comprehensive approach to crisis response, providing community members access to officers and civilian mental health professionals specially trained to assist those in heightened states of disassociation, distress, or other behavioral health challenges. We are committed to de-escalating situations and connecting individuals to the appropriate resources and support services.
Every CIT officer undergoes specialized training that includes:
• Recognizing signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.
• De-escalation techniques tailored to individuals in crisis.
• Understanding trauma and its impact on behavior.
• Responding to individuals experiencing disassociation or psychosis.
• Building collaborative relationships with mental health providers.
By equipping our officers with these skills, we ensure that they are prepared to respond with empathy, professionalism, and expertise. The Stoneham Police Department is dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive environment for everyone in our community.
