Stoneham Tri-Community

Bikeway/Greenway Committee

Reestablished by Article 16 at the Special Town Meeting held on October 21, 2009

The Tri-Community Greenway will bring open recreational space to Stoneham, Woburn and Winchester. The Stoneham portion is located on a right-of-way from the Stoneham Branch of the Boston & Lowell (later the Boston & Maine and MBTA) railroad, which stopped passenger service in 1958. This linear park will create a place to bike, walk and enjoy nature in the heart of our community.

The project to create a multi-use trail is being directed by MassDOT and is paid for with state and federal funds.

Project Status

The Tri-Community Greenway project has received the official notice to proceed from MassDOT.  Construction began in Winchester in June 2017 and will continue for approximately a year.

As construction of the pathway wraps up in Winchester in early fall, it will move onto Woburn and Stoneham.  As of October, some prep work is being down the railroad right-of-way in Stoneham. Once the pathway has been constructed in all three towns and paved (sometime in the spring of 2018 depending on the weather) the contractor will then put in signage, crosswalks and other striping and pedestrian signals for all three towns.

You can see periodic updates here as they are available.  For more detailed information, see the Tri-Community Greenway site.
