The Unicorn Golf Course was originally built in 1928 by the Boston Athletic Association as a premiere 18 hole private golf course. The architectural firm of Stile and Van Kleek was responsible for the design and development of the course, which covered portions from both towns of Stoneham and Woburn. In 1972 the town of Stoneham purchased the property within Stoneham and built the course now known as Unicorn.
Unicorn is a classic municipal nine hole course with straight fairways and multiple out of bound lines in adjoining fairways. There is one practice putting green and two chipping greens. From the blue tees the course is a par 35 and is 3,234 yards long with a slope rating of 126.0 and a course rating of 70.8. From the red tees the course is a par 37 and is 2,902 yards long with a slope rating of 129.0 and a course rating of 73.0.
