Senior Chorus
Thursday 9:30 a.m. Choral Director Linda Kirk conducts this spirited group of seniors who call themselves "The Silver Notes". Singing is good for the mind, body & soul! A tambourine band has been added at 10:30.
TAMBOURINE BAND
You might ask, what is a tambourine band? The answer would be a group of people, each with a tambourine in hand, performing precision routines. They jingle, jangle, tap and hit the instrument with different body parts! The sound harkens back to the old minstrel and vaudeville shows with routines set to music like California Here I Come, Stars and Stripes Forever, and Ragtime Dance.
During the summer months, the Silver Notes Chorus Director, Linda Kirk, asked the chorus if anyone would be interested in starting an experimental tambourine band. Since Linda had never tried anything like this herself, the experiment was: could she choreograph such a routine and could they get it! There were a 6 or 7 folks who were excited to try and thus was born the Senior Center’s Tambourine Band. We began rehearsing and discovered that not only was this a really fun time, but it also is great stimulus for brain work and aerobic motion. We stretch all parts of ourselves. So far we’ve learned and performed 3 routines and we have 2 more routines “in the works”. We’re no longer an experiment but an important part of our Thursday morning!
Although this group was born from the chorus, it is not restricted to the chorus. We just happened to know each other so it was a good starting point. The invitation to join us is open to anyone who wants to get a little exercise and have a lot of fun. The focus is intense but the rewards are awesome. Please come smile with us on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m.to 11:15 a.m. upstairs near the piano. Thanks to Linda Kirk for submitting this article.
